Last Tuesday, 20 October 2026, the photography exhibition “Dreaming Oceans” opened in Madrid, organised by La Casa del Lector in collaboration with the Fundación Arango Lara.
The exhibition brings together 32 photographs taken during the Save the Iberian Orca campaign in the Strait, in collaboration with Iberian Orca Guardians, by Cristina Otero Sabio and Alexandra Johnston, together with images taken on board WeWhale Lanzarote by Gonzalo Apesteguía Zamorano.

Through these images we wanted to show the more personal side of the Iberian orcas: the different family groups, the bond between mothers and calves, and the individual personalities we have come to recognise after years of following them in the Strait. Each photograph tells the story of a specific orca, many of them already familiar “fins” to our research team.
Janek, founder of WeWhale, travelled to Madrid together with Cristina, field responsible of the project and Gonzalo, manager and captain at WeWhale Lanzarote, to present the project and the exhibition. During the event we shared the research and conservation work carried out by WeWhale and talked about the orcas in the photographs, as well as curiosities and experiences from our encounters with cetaceans in the Canary Islands.

Thank you to everyone who stopped to listen to us, and to the organisers for making the evening possible.
The exhibition can be visited at Matadero Madrid until February, with a further selection of works also on display and available for a charity auction in aid of the association at OneShot Hotels.
We hope you drop by and get to know some of our orcas a little better!
